Video Essay: A New Era of Storytelling

Have you ever wondered how to find information on any topic you want, in a format that is easy to watch and very entertaining? Maybe you are doing an investigation of a specific theme and can’t find anything in Google, or the things that you find are articles so long and boring that you fall asleep reading them. Perhaps you’ve encountered a documentary with a slow pace and such a long duration that you don’t have enough time to watch it. What if I told you that there is a phenomenon happening right now on YouTube that combines good information, is easy to find, and will keep you awake the entire time.

In our increasingly visual and fast paced world, traditional forms of communication are evolving. Enter the video essay: a dynamic combination of motion graphics, video, sound effects and music. This compelling format is rapidly gaining popularity, offering unique advantages in education, entertainment, and social commentary. From thought provoking documentaries to insightful critiques of contemporary culture, video essays are transforming how we learn, connect, and engage with the world around us.

Why it Matters?

Video essays are great, they’re a versatile way to learn, connect, and explore the world. They create these really engaging stories that use visuals, sound, and music to explain things that are hard to put into words and they’re actually fun to watch.

One cool thing about video essays is how easy they are to digest. You can find subtitles in different languages, making them accessible to everyone. And seriously, you can find videos about anything you can imagine.

Take Nerdwriter1, for example, you can learn about art with his video on “Why This Is Rembrandt’s Masterpiece”

And then you can check out another video of him talking about “How music was made on Super Nintendo” – totally different topics.

And guess what? Making video essays is easier than ever. Anyone with a phone and some basic editing tools can create one. This opens the door for tons of different voices and perspectives, making the internet a more interesting and inclusive place.

Another one of my favorite YouTube channels is Every Frame a Painting. He analyzes movies, directors, animation, and all the little details that make films special. I’ve been watching since he started.

Cleo Abram made a video essay about AI, which was super interesting. She talked about how some people think AI will become Skynet and destroy us all, while others think it’ll just make our lives easier. It got me thinking, maybe this whole text was written by an AI! Who knows?

What’s next?

When we talk about AI, we can expect to see some new ways to tell stories. AI is going to make video editing tools way easier to use, so creators can create better content. And with VR and AR getting bigger, we’re gonna see how storytelling and narratives evolve. Starting with the video essays, that are like the new era of communication, they’re changing how we learn, connect, and see the world. And with tech getting better all the time, video essays are only going to get better.

So, if you’ve gotten this far and you’re wondering if all this info would be better in a video essay instead of reading this article, you’re probably right. If you have a story, hobby, experience, or knowledge about any topic that you think would make a cool video essay, contact us!
